0-10V Dimming

0-10V dimming is a lighting control method where the dimmer itself is powered with direct current voltage (DC) that operates between 0 and 10 volts to control the light output for an Alternating Current (AC) powered light source. One of the earliest and simplest electronic lighting control signaling systems, it was first used as an early fluorescent dimming system and is still used today. 0-10V dimming is the simplest control system available for quality lighting and it has become a reliable LED dimming control protocol. 0-10V controlled lighting can be scaled so that at 10V, the smoothly controlled light can be at 100% of its potential output. At 0V, it should be at the lowest possible dimming level. Commercial 0-10V dimmers and residential 0-10V dimmers are offered for lighting in a wide range of environments.

Accent Lighting

Localized and directional lighting used to highlight or focus attention on a specific object or space and can add drama to a room or outdoor space. As part of a decorating scheme and often incorporated into custom lighting designs, Accent Lighting is used to direct illumination on paintings, pottery, plants, artifacts and other objects, highlight the texture of a wall, drapery or outside landscaping, and wash a wall. Accent lighting, used with spots, picture lights, recessed fixtures or wall sconces, requires at least three times as much light on the focal point. However, sometimes accent lighting can be defined as an accent piece, such as a uniquely decorative chandelier, wall sconce or lighting fixture with a design that enhances the decor.

Acorn Lighting

A nature inspired icon that is usually featured in beautiful rustic stained glass lighting and created with the famous copper foil construction. The Acorn profile is often adorned with stunning metal Oak leaf branches and accents as a chandelier, ceiling flushmount, ceiling semi-flushmount, and pendant. The fruit of an Oak Tree found in New England, Texas, the Southeast and other regions of the U.S., the Acorn serves as inspiration to beautiful functional lighted designs. Often a staple for many rustic lighting themes, the Acorn lighting collection is as timeless as the oak tree itself.

ADA Compliant Lighting

Required to ensure that disabled individuals can pass through buildings in a safe manner. ADA (The Americans with Disabilities Act Standards for Accessible Design) compliant lighting guarantees that buildings are easily accessible for those with disabilities. Enacted in 1992, for the purpose of eliminating discrimination against people with disabilities. A wall light can be no more than 4 inches from the wall and it must be mounted between 27 inches to 80 inches above the finished floor, in walkways, halls, corridors, passageways or aisles. While many wall sconces meet this requirement, others may need to be customized to adhere to this criteria. The ADA requires that light switches be placed anywhere from 15 to 48 inches on the wall. Learn more with our online article A Guide to ADA Compliant Lighting.

Adirondack Lighting Style

A popular rustic indoor and outdoor lighting fixture style that was advanced by Meyda Co-Founder Meyer Cohen on the front porch of his summer studio in Old Forge in Upstate New York, nearly 50 years ago. This style is exemplified in the famous lanterns which were designed and handcrafted of beautiful stained glass as pendants and wall sconces that can be seen adorning camps, lake houses and vacation homes throughout the Adirondack Mountains. Modern mountain lighting designs serve as the inspiration for many homeowners that love this relaxing vibe. This rustic decorative lighting design includes natural materials such as driftwood and reclaimed wood, pops of color and whimsical accents. The Adirondack Style is also evidenced by the highly popular Adirondack Chairs but also includes such popular design themes as Cabin Decor; Modern Cabin Lighting; and Wildlife Lighting styles. Many designers are inspired to create a rustic made-to-order offering that comprises animals, acorns, pinecones and other nature inspired motifs. This style can be used in the mountain and lake regions of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, the Blue Mountains of Penn., the Appalachian Mountains of the Virginias, and the Pacific Northwest.

Alabaster

Alabaster is a soft, fine-grained sedimentary gypsum rock with a smooth, translucent appearance that creates a warm glow to enhance any room of your home. An alabaster lamp or lighting fixture shade can be made of alabaster stone which is much like marble in that it is quarried, cut and made into shades and bowls. Alabaster creates a warm, rich look, with each piece being completely unique. Each piece of alabaster varies in color, tint and pattern and no two alabaster lighting fixtures are identical.

Ambient Lighting

Also known as general lighting, ambient lighting provides an area with overall, non-specific illumination that sets the tone of the room. Ambient lighting radiates a comfortable level of brightness, enabling one to see and walk about safely. It can be accomplished with Custom Chandeliers and Pendants, Tiffany Ceiling Fixtures, or Rustic Wall-mounted fixtures, recessed or track lighting or with Outdoor Craftsman Lighting Fixtures. A basic form of lighting that replaces sunlight, ambient lighting is fundamental to lighting a home, hospitality location or commercial environment. Positioning functional luminaires around the perimeter or a chandelier in the center of a room can help the room look larger and provide an overall comfortable level of light. For more control over the brightness and mood of the room, use Lighting Dimmers that can control illumination according to the daylight and the progression of the day into nighttime. This is one of the Four Layers of Light.- see Task Lighting, Accent Lighting and Decorative Lighting

Amperes

(Amps) Amp is short for Ampere and a standard unit to define measurements of electricity or the intensity of electrical current. In incandescent lamps or bulbs, the current is related to voltage and power as follows: Watts (power) = Volts x Amps (current). While an amp measures electricity, a Volt is the measurement of the electromotive force in an electrical circuit or device and represents the difference in potential that drives amps to flow through the circuit, and equal to a flow of one coulomb per second. A Watt is a unit of electrical power used to indicate power consumption, and equivalent to one joule per second, corresponding to the power in an electrical circuit in which the potential difference is one volt and the current one amp.

Antlers are used to create magnificent rustic chandeliers, pendants, wall sconces and other fixtures and lamps. Antlers are used to design rustic decorative lighting and other themes including farmhouse and bohemian. Very popular in the Rocky Mountains, the Adirondacks and other regions of the U.S. and Canada. Large Antler Chandeliers are ideal for a great room, a man cave, and other appropriate spaces. Contact the manufacturer to specify a custom design or custom size.

Anodized Finish

A highly durable and abrasion-resistant finish consisting of a protective thin, near transparent coating of aluminum oxide on the surface of an aluminum reflector. An anodized finish is particularly durable in high-traffic areas where the coating is subject to physical abuse and abrasive cleaners. Anodic coatings do not peel, chip, flake, or chalk. There are some unique considerations to understand before selecting an anodized finish. First, part and fixture sizes may be restricted to the size of the finish application immersion tank. The tank is required for the electrochemical finishing process that is indicative of anodizing. Second, exact color matching (although totally possible) may be costly and time consuming to produce.

Antique Finish

An Antique Finish simulates the look of aging. It is often accomplished by wiping a dark pigment across a metal or wooden component of a lighting fixture or lamp base. Popular finishes include Antique Brass, Antique Copper, Antique Iron Gate, Antique Black, Antique Rust and more. Fabric shades can also have an antique finish such as Antique White and Antique Cream.

Aperture

An aperture is the opening of a fixture through which light is projected. Apertures are offered in a variety of sizes depending on the lighting fixture, its optics and the specific type of application.

Arts & Crafts Style Lighting

Arts and Crafts was a design movement initiated by William Morris in 1861 which aimed to improve the quality of design and make it available to the masses in an attempt to reform design and decoration in mid-19th century Britain. It was a reaction against machinery and factory production of mass produced consumer goods and a belief in craftsmanship which stresses the inherent beauty of the material, the importance of nature as inspiration, and the value of simplicity, utility, and beauty. William Morris and Gustav Stickley and Charles Rennie Mackintosh popularized the style overseas. In America, architect and furniture designer Frank Lloyd Wright created a return to the simple, functional beauty of furnishings crafted by hand. Arts & Crafts inspired other decorative lighting styles including Mission, Tiffany, Bungalow, Prairie and American Craftsman genres.

A-Type Lamp

(Bulb) A standard general service bulb that is the most common incandescent household lamp or bulb. The A designates the teardrop pear-shape of a standard light bulb that produces light. Most standard screw-base light bulbs are A types that are used in both residential and commercial applications and screw-in using an Edison screw. Most A-Type Lamps are offered as an E26 socket (medium base) compatible but GU24 base is also an option for energy efficient led and CFL lamps.

Bathbar Lighting

(Bath Bar)
A Bathbar (or Bath Bar) is a linear wall lighting fixture that delivers task lighting in a bath or powder room, typically to supplement the general lighting provided by ceiling fixtures and other wall lights. Bathbars are also known as vanity lights that are installed above or around a mirror. These luminaires are similar to lighting in theater dressing rooms and usually arranged to provide optimal illumination for shaving, grooming and applying makeup.

Bent Glass

Bent glass (also known as curved glass) is glass that has been reheated and reshaped while very hot to form a curved surface for a lighting diffuser or shade. The action of heating and reshaping glass is extremely challenging due to the high temperatures required as well as the correct annealing sequence to prevent damage to the glass panel. Quality Bent Glass, a division of Meyda Lighting, opened its doors at the turn of the 20th century and revolutionized the manufacturing process for high temperature glass forming and bending by custom building production capacity glass forming ovens and kilns. Today Meyda Lighting is one of the only remaining manufacturers of bent glass lamp shades and takes pride in a rich heritage and expertise of over 100 years in the making. Meyda is still creating timeless bent glass masterpieces using original tools, technologies and techniques. High-fired glass designs and metal finishes are customizable as each Meyda bent glass lamp or fixture is handcrafted to order. Blown Glass Lighting

Blown glass lighting is a type of decorative lighting shades and diffusers that are created with glass forming techniques performed by a craftsperson who inflates molten glass into a bubble, or blows glass, with the aid of a blowpipe. Using a special understanding of different types of glass and how it bends with stress releasing processes performed to ensure durability, the glassblower, glassmith, or gaffer uses pipes and hot working glass to create mouth-blown glass shades in very high temperature-controlled furnaces with molten glass set at 2000° plus. Lighting diffusers and shades are created with special contours, curves, bends and castings. Blown glass lighting fixtures and lamps are a highly sought-after type of decorative lighting and featured in the famous Meyda Tiffany Pond Lily Favrile styles and Revival Gas & Electric Collection.

Bobeche

A bobeche is the saucer, cup, collar or ring at the base of a candle originally designed to catch the wax drippings of the candle. Today, a bobeche is typically used as a decorative glass or metal component located at the base of a faux candlelight on a chandelier, as well as other types of ceiling and wall lighting fixtures. It is not uncommon to use a multiple of bobeches to complement a multi-light chandelier.

CCT or Correlated Color Temperature

Color temperature (Correlated Color Temperature, or CCT) is essentially a gauge of how yellow or blue the color of light emitted from a light source appears. CCT is measured in Kelvin. The letter K is added as a suffix behind the value typically between 2200K and 6500K. A warm light is around 2700K or less, neutral or crisp white white at around 3000K-4000K, and cool white at 5000K or more. Warmer temperatures are generally used in dining areas such as restaurants and home theaters for a more intimate setting while cooler light temperatures are used for a clean crisp light to create alertness in hospitals and offices.

Chandel-Airs

Meyda's exclusive, award-winning lighting design features a customized fan integrated lighting design. Stunning light designs feature diffusers crafted of glass, micas, Idalight and fabric. The fixtures are complemented with a variety of handsome metal finishes. Layered lighting can be customized on most Chandel-Air fixtures with accent lights for task illumination, inner lamps for decorative lighting, and uplights for ambient lighting. Gentle breezes are created by the fan spinning quietly in the center. In summer, the fan pushes down a windchill that circulates to keep the space cool and comfortable. In winter, the fan is reversed to pull the room air up towards the ceiling and force the warm air back down and circulate to create warmth. The Chandel-Airs are UL and cUL listed for damp and dry locations. Offered with a wide range of customizable designs, diffusers, sizes and finishes, Chandel-Airs can be designed to complement rustic, contemporary and many other types of decor, in residential, hospitality and commercial settings. Color Rendering Index

(CRI)
CRI or the Color Rendering Index is an industry measurement of the ability of a light source to reveal the true colors of objects, in comparison with an ideal or natural light source. The CRI is expressed on a scale from 0 to 100 percent and is most commonly used to measure the quality of a Light emitting diode (LED) in an integrated LED fixture or lamp, as incandescent lamps naturally have a high CRI. The higher the CRI, the better the color rendition capacity, and the lower the number, then color rendering is of a lesser quality. Light sources with a high CRI are desirable in color-critical applications such as neonatal care and artwork display. A good CRI is usually 80 or 90, but LEDs with >90 are much higher quality.

Compact Fluorescent

(CFL) Also called a CFL bulb or lamp, these are small fluorescent light sources that are sometimes used as an alternative to incandescent lighting. The bulb-lamp life is about ten times longer than incandescent lamps and is 3 to 4 times brighter. Also referred to as PLI DL, CFL or BIAX lamps. Does not have a rated life close to an LED which is much more energy efficient. Many CFLs are now being replaced with more energy efficient LEDs (light emitting diodes). CFLS are made of a glass tube filled with gases and coated on the inside with a fluorescent material. When the current is switched on, the starting mechanism produces electrons that excite the gases inside the tube which then release ultraviolet radiation. This in turn excites the coating on the inside of the tube, which emits visible light through the surface of the lamp. Disadvantages include: poor dimming capability, limited color temperature availability, cold temperature sensitivity, and slow "start-up" times.

Copper Foil Construction

The famous Meyda Tiffany copper foil construction process creates beautiful Tiffany styled stained glass lamps, lighting fixtures and windows. The process features narrow strips of copper tape used to wrap the edges of glass pieces that have been cut by hand into a copper foil lamp shade pattern. When wrapped, solder is applied, bonding the glass pieces together. This famous Tiffany style shade manufacturing technique was upgraded by Meyda Founder Meyer Cohen, a master craftsman and inventor who started the business as a hobby. Tiffany style copper foil lamps and lighting fixtures are handcrafted for residential, hospitality and commercial applications. Meyda later evolved into America's Premier decorative lighting manufacturing and importing company of stained glass copper foil lamp shades, Tiffany Reproductions and Meyda Original Designs. Each is a unique work of art and of heirloom quality for generations to cherish for many years to come- many offered as rustic lighting, nouveau lighting and custom lighting designs. Original Tiffanies were created with stained glass shades and windows designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany and his design studio.

Crackle Glass or Ice Glass Lighting

Crackle Glass Lighting or Ice Glass Lighting features shades or diffusers that have an uneven surface resembling the look of cracked ice. The texture and pattern are created by blowing molten glass into a small bulb, then treating the surface by rolling it on a heated marver (a metal benchtop), before dipping it into cold water. This process cracks the surface of the glass, which can be reheated and blown larger to melt the sharp edges and widen the crackle effect. The technique requires advanced skills and meticulous attention to detail, to avoid shattering the glass and melting the cracks completely. Crackle Glass was first developed in Venice in the 16th century.

Craftsman Signature Series

(Also see Build Your Own) To meet your exterior and interior custom lighting needs, our Build Your Own line or Craftsman Signature Series features Brass and Copper fixtures with unlimited combinations of styles, functions, sizes and finishes. The series features Outdoor Lanterns for patios and decks including wall sconces, pier mounts, post mounts, and deck lights, as well as indoor fixtures such as chandeliers, pendants, wall fixtures and portable lamps. Fixtures rated for damp locations can be used in rooms such as interior kitchens and baths, or in some covered outside spaces. Damp rated fixtures such as wall sconces, pendants, chandeliers and other fixtures also may be used in any place that requires Dry Location fixtures, where a light can only be used indoors in a fully protected area, but cannot be used in wet locations where there is complete exposure to the elements. However, Damp listed fixtures can be installed in some outdoor areas with limited weather exposure including: covered porches and entryways; covered gazebos, solariums, and pergolas; port cocheres; and similar spaces.

Dark Sky Lighting

Dark Sky compliant lighting is designed to keep outdoor lighting fixtures from emitting light upward into the sky. This type of design meets "dark sky" ordinances that many cities have implemented to control light pollution. Contemporary outdoor lighting fixtures such as Modern Wall Mounts minimize light pollution and glare while meeting local government requirements. The latest fixtures also use energy efficient LEDs for energy savings, reduced maintenance and a long rated life. Different types of reflectors, shields, cut-off angles and bulb types may be used. To learn more, contact the International Dark-Sky Association which works to protect the night skies for present and future generations.

Deco Lighting or Art Deco Lighting

Deco or Art Deco Lighting dates back to styles from the Early 20th Century. These lighting designs are defined by strong, repetitious, rhythmic lines (such as the Chrysler or Empire State Buildings). A mechanical/engineering look and feel is often incorporated in these lighting fixtures. Deco lighting featured bold colors, strong geometry, luxurious textures and luxurious materials. It combines the Roaring Twenties glamour with contemporary and is characterized by symmetrical patterns and geometric details. Art Deco lighting employs a variety of finishes to create a distinctive and futuristic effect, including tiered, elongated architectural forms featuring everything from skyscraper shades to stepped finials.

Available in a variety of textures and up to 50 thin coating layers with shifting color structures, modern dichroic glass is offered in a transmitted color seen through transparent clear dichroic glass, or a reflected color when viewed through opaque dichroic glass as light bounces off of the surface. Dichroic Glass diffusers are commonly found in pendants, chandeliers, lamps and wall sconces. Enjoy an eye-catching and exciting lighting experience when viewing a Dichroic Glass fixture from different angles throughout the space.

Dry Listed Lighting

Dry Listed or Dry rated is a certification of a lighting fixture's ability to operate optimally without any exposure to moisture after testing in a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory such as UL (Underwriter Laboratories), ETL (Electrical Testing Laboratories) or CSA (Canadian Standards Association). Fixtures rated for dry locations can be used in any interior space and include wall sconces, pendants, chandeliers and other fixtures where a light can only be used in a fully protected area. Dry listed portable lamps and lighting fixtures can be used in interior kitchens, dining rooms, hallways, offices, conference rooms, and reception areas.

ENERGY STAR

To earn the ENERGY STAR label, energy efficient lighting products must be third-party certified based on testing in EPA-recognized laboratories to meet their stringent requirements. This prestigious designation and label are given to consumer products that meet energy efficiency standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). ENERGY STAR is a program that was established in 1992 to help businesses and consumers save money and protect our climate through superior energy efficiency. A wide range of ENERGY STAR-rated lighting designs are offered in today's marketplace, however there are many energy efficient lighting styles available that are not ES rated.

ETL (Electrical Testing Laboratory)

ETL (Electrical Testing Laboratory) is an Independent testing lab that performs tests on lighting fixtures and ballasts to set safety standards and certify accuracy of performance data. cETL is the lab that performs tests and certifies lighting fixtures for use in Canada. The certification comes from Intertek's Electrical Testing Labs. Like UL, Intertek is an OSHA Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory with the goal of creating safe working and living environments.

Farmhouse Lighting

Farmhouse style is an interior design style that prioritizes practicality, simplicity, and rustic charm. While farmhouse style tends to reflect the aesthetics of rural architecture, it also embraces modern comforts, creating a look that feels both cozy and stylish. The modern farmhouse style is the perfect blend of the traditional rustic look with the more minimal contemporary design. Modern Farmhouse style coordinates clean lines, multiple layers of texture, neutral color palettes, and natural finishes.

Favrile Glass Lighting

Richly colored iridescent glass developed by Louis Comfort Tiffany that is used to create magnificent lighting shades. Drapery styled, streaky and striated glass shades are handcrafted by artisans who use special tools to move and twist hot glass into folds while blending two or more colors of molten glass together. It differs from most iridescent glass because the color is ingrained in the glass itself, as well as having distinctive coloring. Tiffany won a grand prize at the 1900 Paris Exposition for his Favrile glass and used it in stained glass windows and lighting. Meyda uses beautiful Favrile Glass in its Revival Collection of early electric reproduction chandeliers, pendants and other lighting fixtures that are often handcrafted of solid brass with authentic decorative/functional accents. Meyda's famous Pond Lily table and floor lamps, chandeliers and wall sconces recreate the famous Tiffany Favrile design with beautiful mouth blown glass shades.

Fern Glass

Fern Glass is a type of glass created using proprietary techniques that delicately etch the glass surface resulting in a natural pattern, like frost on a window pane. Fern Glass evokes the look of needling ice-like crystallization on clear translucent glass revealed like a frosty window's shelter from frozen gusts and chill in January. This delicate, intricately patterned glass offers unique silhouettes that add an intricate layer of character to your product for nearly any application worthy of an eye-popping aesthetic. Ideal as a material to create a beautiful shade for table/floor lamps or to build striking ceiling/wall fixtures. Fern glass was used in stained glass windows in the Vatican and Manton stained glass lamp shades and windows.

Flush Mount

A Flush Mount is a lighting fixture that mounts directly to the ceiling and typically shines light downward. There is no space between the ceiling and the fixture which mounts directly to the junction box, and is not suspended with a downrod, stem, cable or cord. The design of the light enables the fixture to sit flush or nearly flush with the ceiling surface. We define a Flush Mount as a fixture that is approximately 3 inches or less between the shade and the ceiling, or it has multiple shades that hang individually from a pan, like a shower flushmount with a total drop less than 12 inches. These fixtures include Tiffany flush mounts, LED flush mounts, Modern flush mounts and others in a variety of styles and finishes, and with standard light sources. Ideal for spaces with lower ceilings and to prevent dust and debris from the lamp and shade.

Fused Glass

Fused Glass is the art glass created by melting two or more pieces of glass by heat in a kiln including "tack fusing" which combines pieces of glass that are heated until they are hot enough to stick together and retain many of their own original characteristics. No two pieces are exactly alike. Fused glass can be used as a lamp shade or diffuser in pendants, sconces and other fixtures to create unique glass textures and stunning color/design combinations. Fused Glass lighting is created with hot glass fabrication techniques mastered in our Quality Bent Glass division. Traditional workmanship, high fire kilns and original tools are used to slump and fuse glass in the old world tradition. Sinks and countertops are extreme examples of these custom capabilities. Fused glass lamp shades and lighting fixtures can be customized to your specifications with colors, designs and sizes.

This unique type of glass refracts light beautifully and offers stunning illumination throughout the fixture diffusers, for a mesmerizing translucent effect. Granite glass is typically used as a decorative trim such as swirling ribbons, scalloped motifs and decorative accents in popular Art Glass Pendants, Chandeliers and other Ceiling Fixtures.

Halogen

A halogen lamp is an incandescent lamp with a filament that is surrounded by halogen gases, allowing the filament to operate at higher temperatures. Higher working temperatures compared to other incandescent lamps result in a higher efficacy, which translates into a high lumens-per-watt ratio, and also delivers a brighter higher-quality light and prolonged life. Advantages to this lamp vs an LED equates to a perfect color rendering index (CRI) of 100 meaning that both of these types of light sources work well for illuminating sculptures, paintings and other art pieces, as well as fine interiors. Disadvantages include high energy consumption and high heat output when compared to the LED counterparts-- which could degrade the quality of the artwork on the wall or can degrade perishables in the kitchen. A variety of halogen bulbs are offered in different shapes and sizes but they are mainly used as a spotlight for ambient light and task lighting but most commonly for accent lighting when focused on artwork, trophy animals, carvings, ironworks, or fine stonework such as the wall around a fireplace. Halogen lamps work well in most directional lighting applications including a spotlight on our award-winning Chandel-Airs, which integrate ceiling fans into a custom lighting designs.

Tiffany Studios

Tiffany Studios was established in 1892 as the Tiffany Glass & Decorating Company, and later became Tiffany Studios, once one of America's premier glassworks. The studios closed in 1930, just before the death of its founder Louis Comfort Tiffany, in 1933. Today, many Tiffany Lamp and Fixture Reproductions are created, based off of the old designs from Tiffany Studios. In 2006, a major exhibition of the work of Tiffany Studios opened at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The company was active from 1878 until 1933, and best known for its stained glass windows, Tiffany lamps, cast bronze bases, mosaic installations, and luxury items such as desk sets. Popular Tiffany Reproductions include Dragonfly and Hanginghead Dragonfly, Turning Leaf, Cabbage Rose, Rosebush, Fishscale, and many other designs. Tiffany Studios invented the famous copper foil technique of creating stained glass fixtures and windows.

Title 24

(California Title 24) Title 24 is a group of stringent energy efficiency standards for homes and commercial buildings. Since 1978, California residents are required to meet the energy efficiency standards contained in Title 24, Part 6 of the California Code of Regulations. Since energy efficient lighting fixtures and appliances reduce energy costs, they also increase reliability and availability of electricity, improve building occupant comfort, and reduce the impact to the environment. Any new homes, or the remodeled homes that require building permits, are also subject to these standards. According to Title 24, at least 50% of the wattage in the kitchen must be consumed by high-efficacy lighting, which usually includes LEDs and fluorescents. LED fixtures require a minimum of 90 on the color-rendering index (CRI), which measures crispness and color accuracy. Also, the correlated color temperature (CCT) must range between 2700-4000K for indoor use.

Torchiere

Portable floor lamp with a shade or glass element that directs upward towards the ceiling. This type of indirect lighting is ideal for general illumination and is widely used in living rooms, seating areas, and media rooms. Many torchieres feature adjustable side lights on the lamp column that provide both general and task light sources in one lamp. Dimmable Torchieres are compatible with LEDs and other light sources and remain one of the most popular types of floor lamps on the market today. A wide variety are available for residential lighting, as well as commercial and hospitality settings. Torchieres are featured with Tiffany styled stained glass shades, as well as many other types of shades including Micas, Fused Glass and Fabrics. This type of residential lighting is dimmable and compatible with LED replacement lamps.

TRIAC Dimming

TRIAC stands for Triode for Alternating Current and is a popular dimming switch that is used to control power. A popular household dimming method, TRIAC is often used in lighting applications as an alternative to electronic low voltage or 0-10V dimmers. TRIAC is mainly used for incandescent and halogen, but is now used for dimming LED lamps and fixtures.

Translucent Lens Material

Translucent Lens materials such as alabaster, colored glass, or colored acrylic allow light transmission while diffusing so objects cannot be seen clearly. Opalescent, Granite, Murano, Fern, and Frosted Glass are examples of translucent glass. Botticino and Statuario Idalight are translucent acrylics.

Transparent Lens Material

Transparent Lens Material allows light through and allows a distinct view to the other side. Materials include clear art glass, fine crystal, or Crystal Idalight. Transparent types of glass are used in table lamps, chandeliers, and floor lamps in various styles and sizes.

Turtleback Glass Tile

A Turtleback Glass Tile is molded glass that is unique in shape and thickness and usually designed as a decorative accent for a lighting diffuser or shade. Turtleback Glass accents are often used on Tiffany style stained glass lamps and lighting fixtures including Tiffany Pendants and Tiffany Lamps. Tiffany Turtleback Glass accents are featured on both stained glass shades and lamp bases. Popularized by the original Tiffany Studios and reproduced by skilled craftsmen to this day, Turtleback Glass Lighting typically includes belted bands that reveal inset borders of lustrous tiles in a variety of styles and colors. Also available in Iridescent Glass.

Turtle Friendly Lighting

Large numbers of sea turtles are endangered every year because electric lighting along beachfront properties and coastlines creates light pollution and ecological disturbances that disorient Turtles. According to the Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC), 90% of sea turtle nesting in the United States takes place on Florida beaches and the organization has worked to tighten guidelines on beaches where property owners are restricted to amber light sources when visible from the beach. Our Turtle-Friendly Custom Lighting Solutions are engineered with interchangeable White and Amber energy-efficient LEDs while using full dimming capabilities. Combined with proper shielding, LEDs transition from White to Amber over 577 nanometers of a wavelength so the light does not disturb turtles when they come to shore to lay their eggs during nesting season and help hatchlings navigate from the nest to the shore.

Wall Grazing

Wall Grazing is a lighting technique used to create a beam of light that hits the wall or facade at a narrow angle from the floor or ceiling. This technique highlights textured surfaces and architectural elements such as brick, etched glass, mosaic tiles, draperies and natural stone. Mount the lights 6 to 12 inches from the wall, with the fixtures at the same distance apart and aimed towards the targeted surface. Wall Grazing is typically used to add interest, accent and focus on specific types of surfaces. Interior wall grazing and exterior wall grazing are ideal for bringing out the beauty of the special materials and features of a wall or facade. Similar to wall washing, wall grazing is used to highlight natural variations in the wall material while wall washing is primarily used to cover imperfections.

Wall Lighting

(Wall Sconces, Wall Mounts) Wall Lighting is illumination directed on a wall or vertical surface to emphasize that plane, enhance the surface texture, or bounce light back into the room. Increasing wall brightness generally makes a room seem more spacious. Wall lighting is achieved with Wall Lights or Wall Sconces, also called Wall Mounts, throughout the walls on interior rooms in corridors and along stairways. In bedrooms and offices, Swing Arm style Wall Lamps are used for reading and other tasks. A broad range of Exterior Wall Lighting Fixtures are available for lighting facades. Decorative Wall Lights include Modern Wall Sconces, LED Wall Fixtures and other wall luminaires in Rustic, Tiffany, Gothic and a wide variety of themes and styles. Wall-Mount Fixtures may provide general, task and accent lighting and can be designed to match and coordinate with dining room chandeliers or other lighting fixtures. Wall brackets, which are also called Custom Vanity Lights, are often used for task lighting near the bathroom mirror.

Wall Wash Lighting

Wall Washing is an effective lighting technique that provides an even, wide beam of light on interior and exterior walls and facades with fixtures mounted on the ceiling or ground. For most surfaces, mount the fixture 2 to 4 feet from the wall and wash 8 to 9 feet of vertical wall space with light. Space the fixtures the same distance apart for uniform brightness while drawing attention to the wall or facade. Accentuate an entrance, fireplace, mural, or artwork or evoke a feeling of spaciousness to hallways and narrow rooms.

Wet Location, Wet Listed or Wet Rated Lighting

Wet Location Listed or Wet Rated is a certification of a lighting fixture's ability to operate optimally outdoors with full and direct exposure to water including rain, snow, wind and other types of weather, after testing in a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory such as UL (Underwriter Laboratories), ETL (Electrical Testing Laboratories) or CSA (Canadian Standards Association). Fixtures rated for wet locations use waterproof seals to protect their internal components from moisture. Wet rated fixtures also may be used any place that requires Dry Location fixtures, where a light can only be used indoors in a fully protected area, and Damp Locations, which are typically kitchens, baths and spaces that are exposed to some moisture. Wet listed products include but are not limited to outdoor wall sconces, landscape lighting such as path and well lights, street lamps, and other exterior lighting luminaires. Custom fixtures may include wet listed pendants, lamps or other products that require a marine grade finish or special features if installed in oceanfront locations and similar areas.
